Judith A. Copeland, administrative assistant
Judith A. Copeland, an administrative assistant and volunteer, died Sunday of a heart attack at her Elkridge Estates home. She was 76.

The daughter of Dr. George C. Coleman, who had been head of the political science department at what is now Towson University, and Melvina Coleman, an antiques dealer, Judith Anne Coleman was born in Sayre, Okla., and then spent 15 years in Sherman, Texas, before moving in 1958 with her family to Govans.

She was a 1959 graduate of Eastern High School and earned an associate's degree from what was then Baltimore Junior College.

During the 1960s, she was an administrative assistant at NATO headquarters in Brussels, and after two tours of duty remained in Brussels working in a similar capacity for Reynolds Aluminum.

Ms. Copeland returned to Baltimore and continued working as an administrative assistant at WBAL-TV, what is now Mercy Medical Center and, beginning in the late 1980s, for the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

At her death, the former Homeland and Rodgers Forge resident had been an administrative assistant for the Mass Mutual Insurance Co. for the last five years.

Ms. Copeland enjoyed gardening, walking, traveling and volunteering with the SPCA. She also was a cat fancier.

"Everyone loved Judy, and she had a wide circle of friends," said a sister, Helen Y. Coleman of Rodgers Forge.

Ms. Copeland was an active member of St. Andrews Christian Community, 5802 Roland Ave., where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

She is also survived by a brother, Charles C. Coleman of Floyd, Va.; two other sisters, Nancy C. Mace of Salisbury and Vina C. Hughes of Catonsville; and several nieces and nephews.
