Some ECHO readers think Thomas Cook fraudsters were treated worse than sex offenders
ECHO readers were divided over the right punishment for a couple who lied about getting sick on two holidays to Majorca .

Paul Roberts and Deborah Briton were jailed for 15 months and nine months respectively after pretending that two of their annual family trips to Majorca ended in diarrhoea and vomiting.

They complained about their fake sicknesses to Thomas Cook, and Liverpool Crown Court today heard the scam could have cost the travel agent 19,958 in damages and 28,000 in legal costs.

But some readers were shocked that the pair were sent to prison, suggesting others who have committed what they consider more serious crimes receive lesser penalties.

Elle Taylor took to Facebook and said: This isnt good but what makes my blood boil is people get less for rape!

Nickie Jones agreed, saying: While I feel they deserve the punishment, Id rather live next door to them than a paedophile or a drug dealer but they get suspended sentences??? How does that make sense.

Rob OBrien added: Listen, they tried to defraud Thomas Cook and got caught! Come on though. JAIL?!?! Someone with indecent images of children and babies gets community orders?!?! Makes me wanna vomit.

Sharon Newcombe said: Lock these two up and let the nonces roam the streets!!

However, a number of readers supported the courts decision.

Christel Jones saided: They got what they deserved. Why should the hotel in question be downgraded by greedy people who want something for nothing? As for the holiday company, it isnt fair. Just greedy people. Hope they enjoy their porridge. Shameful!!!!

Carol Clucas said: Got what they deserve!!!! Genuine people who are sick abroad dont claim so why the hell should they get away with it? Karma is best served cold.

Other people took to social media to express how they believe that scams such as this make holiday insurance so expensive.

Terry Taylor said: Totally agree with this. These people make holidays more expensive for honest people, plus put others with genuine claims under more scrutiny. I think they should have to pay it all back and go to prison. No excuses. They knew exactly what they doing. No pity for them.

Catherine Sarah Landsborough agreed, saying: Thats what they deserve! This is why hols and insurance have gone up so much!! This is also why the British are disliked in some countries, as we are the only country that puts in claims!
