Difference between Travel & Medical insurance?

So I have been on holiday in Europe (I am from the UK) several times. For my European holidays, I have only ever gotten travel insurance - which also includes some health cover. When I went to America for 4 months in 2015 summer, I got travel insurance & medical insurance. I was unsure why this was needed as travel insurance also covers for health. Can someone please explain the reason to me? Is it because medical insurance is needed for long-stay etc? I am going to NZ at the end of December so I need to understand.
Thanks

Ask your travel agent or the person who you get the insurance from.

Ask the company you purchased the insurance from. Read your policy.

In Europe all countries have some sort of National Health Service with which the UK has what are called reciprocal agreements. This does not exist in the US and medical treatment is not free - in fact is it incredibly expensive having treatment for even a relatively minor injury or illness can cost thousands of dollars.

Travel insurance normally only covers you for stays of up to 3 months. Medical care in the USA is very expensive compared to Europe and being ill without medical cover can bankrupt you.

Travel insurance is MAINLY designed to cover trip costs in case you can't go, the company goes out of business, etc... In other words, a place/way to transfer the risk of losing the cost of the trip due to the inability to partake in the trip for a number of reasons. Travel insurance also can cover medical expenses.
Travel health insurance covers you for unexpected injury or illness while traveling.
So, it depends on what you're looking for when you travel.
