The insurance policy will show what company it is covered by. Hopefully, the
company is still in business. Do you have the title deed?

This is all done and settled at this point, why did you wait 10 years to address this issue????
Try the MIB if you want, but I think that will be a waste of time.

It may be too late. When someone tells you that they have insurance that pays if they die, they are supposed to tell you the name of the insurance company then. If they die without telling you, it may be too late. It is not always possible to find the insurance company after the death occurs. That is why it is very important to know the insurance company before the death.
Some of the ways that you can try (none of which is guaranteed to work) include:
1) Go through everything of hers, especially financial records, like checkbooks, for anything that mentions the insurance even indirectly, such as old checks that might have been from paying for the insurance, medical records that seem to be related to applying for insurance, etc.
2) Pay money to MIB for a list of companies to which she applied for insurance
3) Ask the state Department of Insurance for help
4) Ask her employer (and all her past employers for the last 30 years or so) if she had insurance through them
5) Ask the insurance agents she used for car insurance, health insurance, home insurance, etc., if she also used them for the insurance that you need.

Your mother may have been referring to a life insurance policy that would pay off the mortgage. First you need to ascertain who owns the home. Check with your county's tax assessor. After 10 years if there was a mortgage it's not owned by your mother now.

Are you looking for her life insurance policy? Or something else? Try MIB. It is the only place that is not a scam.

If the mortgage insurance was not procured through the lender, then your mother must have paid premiums on her own. And that means searching her checking account, etc. to see if you can find a name of an insurer to whom she wrote checks. At this late stage, her bank has probably not retained records, so you would need to search through her papers.

Usually the financial institute that her mortgage *bank, credit union, etc* is through would have all that information.

what does an insurance company have anything to do with your mothers house being paid for?
you should contact a solicitor or lawyer, to find what you need.

That was 20 years ago, so what has happened to the house in the meantime. Did it go through probate when she died?

It's quite possible that your Mother was mistaken. As others have said, why now are you asking this question 10 years after she died?
Look through her papers. Look for payments to an insurance company. Do you know what type of insurance she thought was supposed to pay off the house?

From your comments, I get the impression that this was a mortgage life policy. Who got the house when your mother died? That person may have cashed the policy rather than using it to pay off the mortgage which is why there is no record of it now.
