Generally not. You could buy a policy and then let it lapse by not making the second payment.
Why would you only want temporary homeowners insurance though? Why wouldn't you want insurance continuous to protect your home?
No policy will cover pre-existing damage, just so you understand that you cannot buy a policy and immediately put in a claim for something that has already happened.

Yes. You can buy home insurance for a temporary time.

That's one of the main problems with insurance. It's temporary.

You can purchase homeowners insurance for as long a period of time, or as short as you need.
If you need short term coverage while you remodel and flip a home, (for example) then you need a builder's risk policy. There is a type of home coverage for what ever you require.

No. Each state sets the minimum term length for a homeowners policy. Typically, you must buy it in one year increments. You can cancel it in the middle of the term if you want to.
