Do I need credit to start an auto insurance policy?

I just turned 18 and I don't have credit. My mom took my car for some stuff I did and she says the only way she'll give it back is if it gets signed over to my name and if I pay the entirety of my car insurance. I went online and got some quotes and it turns out that it's cheaper for me to just get off my parents insurance and start my own policy. I have a job, but as I mentioned before, I don't have credit so this is where my problem lies. Any advice?

You'll pay a surcharge, but you can certainly buy a policy. Is she planning to give you the car or will you need to get a loan to purchase it? If you need a loan, that's where the credit comes in.

No. You can get insurance without credit. It might cost more. You might have to pay up front instead of making payments. But you can get it.

Many companies pull FICA scores as part of their underwriting. Eighteen is the legal age for some matters in some states. If the policy is in her name and you are sued she will be also. So putting the title in your name, get your own insurance it would be hard for her to be attached.
BTW, smart Mom :)
