If I buy glasses without insurance, and I then enroll in insurance, will I get a refund of what I paid if my insurance plan covers vision?

This is in Illinois. My glasses recently broke and I tried replacing them but I do not have insurance anymore. I really need glasses because I am pretty blind. I already enrolled for Illinicare Health Insurance and now I just need to wait for my card in the mail. If I buy my glasses out of pocket will I get a refund when my Insurance card finally arrives and I take it to the eye clinic? Does it depend on the clinic?

Your new insurance will not pay for any pre- existing health requirements.

Insurance does not apply to something that already happened.

Nope. Can't buy life insurance after you're dead either. Go to Costco. I just bought glasses for $100. You don't need insurance for $100.

No, insurance doesn't pay retroactively, If you didn't have car insurance and were in an accident, would you expect to be able to go buy it and have it cover the accident that already happened?

No. Insurance is not retroactive.

Unless you had insurance on the date of the service you will not be reimbursed.

You cannot get reimbursement for expenses prior to the date of coverage beginning, and there are cases of limited benefits in some policies at the beginning of coverage, but if you enroll in coverage and they accept you and start coverage before you get your card in the mail, you can call them about account numbers and benefits and actually get the exam and glasses before you receive the card.
You need to contact them BEFORE getting the glasses

and determine whether you have coverage yet, and how to proceed without the card itself.

If you wreck your car today with no insurance on the car but you buy an auto insurance policy three days from now, will they cover the accident? .....no
Health care, dental care, and vision care work the same way. They only cover things that happen from the active date of the policy and not events that happened before.
It is not the clinic that would decide. It is the insurance policy that decides what is covered. There are very, very, very few policies that cover anything that happened before the policy was applied for. The only exception are certain forms of welfare policies that might determine that you qualified at the time of services even though you hadn't applied yet. So, if your insurance is going to be from a state or federal welfare plan, then you MIGHT, MAYBE, get a refund or a partial refund, but it is unlikely.
