I submitted a claim with my homeowners insurance because I noticed the outside door jam on my patio doors looked funny and on closer inspection realized they were rotting. The adjuster came out and said it was likely not sealed correctly when the house was built and needed to be replaced. My claim was denied because it was long term water damage but it is in the wall and I could not have possibly noticed it. I have read my policy and it specifically states if it is in a wall, ceiling or floor where the insured could not have seen it then it should be an exception. The patio doors have a large window over them and it will be quite expensive to replace the whole thing. How can I fight this? The

It's one of two things. It's either a complaint to the people that installed it OR it's a lack of maintenance issue. Things don't just start to rot. It's neglect and oversight. I have the same problem. It's my fault. Not anybody elses which makes it not an insurance claim. If a tree or car crashed into your door...then you've got yourself a claim. Maintenance is not a claim.

You can file a complaint with your state insurance commissioner, and specifically quote the exception language for the hidden water damage.
If you have an agent, you should also ask them to contact the insurance company and go to bat for you.

Appeal the decision, insurance companies have an appeal process and state why you believe your claim was improperly denied.

You can take them to court but insurance companies have lots of attorneys.
