Please no stupid answers, do not submit a response unless you actually know what are talking about and are willing to help.
My father is in Columbia for a dentist appointment (dentists are very cheap there). He had his second heart attack today and is in the hospital, but he has health insurance. He has Medicare a and b. The problem is that I am reading online that Medicare does not cover you while you are abroad. Is that true? We have no money, we can t pay for anything out of pocket. What are our options?

No
Medicare does not cover medical costs in other countries except in very rare instances such as you were in an accident close to the Canadian border and the closest hospital was actually in Canada. But for travelers to other countries Medicare pays nothing

No, Medicare will not provide coverage in this case. If he has private health insurance, a Medigap plan, a plan to supplement Medicare, or a combination of these, he will be covered up to the limitations of these policies. This isn't something any of us can answer without having the specific policy information. There WILL be some out-of-pocket expenses. hate to say this, but going to a foreign country for cheap dentistry may not turn out to be so cheap. You've got to take everything into account before you do something.

hey wont cover anyone out of the country except in Mexico and Canada where they have agreements. If you have no money, they probably wont charge you in Colombia if you tell them he is poor. Dont worry. They probably have socialized medicine and nobody pays. Have you asked them?

Read the whole page. It seems like what you are finding is correct. The medical bills will probably not be covered. You can try to submit a claim when you have the bill, but based on what I read, you are not in a covered situation.
If there is a phone number on the medicare card, you could try calling to see if you can get information from an actual person. You could also visit or contact the nearest US embassy to find out what your options might be.

I hope your father is doing well.
Medicare does not pay for treatment outside of the US (unless the accident or illness happened in the US and a foreign hospital is closer for treatment).
Your father needed to purchase travel insurance before traveling to Colombia for health treatment in Colombia.
You are going to have to make payment arrangements with the hospital.

No. Medicare is never, ever, under any circumstances, allowed to cover anything in South America. Medicare is never, ever, under any circumstances, allowed to cover any treatment outside of the U.S. for an emergency that happens outside of the U.S. In very rare cases, if a person has an emergency inside the U.S. and the nearest place to get medical treatment is in Canada or Mexico, then it may cover treatment there. That is the only situation in which it can cover any treatment outside of the U.S.
If he has other insurance, use it. If medicare is his only insurance, then his only options are to come back to the U.S. or not to use it. Either you pay out of pocket or you don't pay. f you can't pay, then either you get treated for free or you don't get treated (I don't know what doctors in Columbia do). But getting medicare to cover it is the one thing that can't possibly happen. He'd have a better chance running for President -- because someone will be elected. No one will get medicare to cover treatment in South America.

No, it won't. He should have bought international health insurance before he left the country. Our regular insurance only covers us in the U.S. Some countries won't let you in without proving that you are covered internationally. Option No. 1 - Get the heck out of there asap, to reduce the costs that are being incurred. Option No. 2 - do what they suggest regarding treatment and deal with the cost later. Nobody is going to believe that he has no money. People with no money do not travel.
