Pretty simple to do, call your agent for assistance.

You cancel the old one and they reimburse you for the time not used. You start the new insurance with the new company. Not a problem. But if there's less than a month left, it's not worth the hassle.

You generally can cancel anytime you like. Sign up for the new one. You tell them what date you want it to start on. Then go and cancel your existing insurance. Again, you tell them what day that is effective. Do not just let you insurance lapse by not paying them. It's best to make sure contact them and cancel.

Why not just finish the current policy out, then switch

It shouldn't cost you anything. Buying cheap insurance gets you screwed it you get into an accident.

You establish the new insurance policy to start a few days later (if you did it tomorrow, have it start Wednesday). You than call your current insurer and have your existing policy cancelled as of Wednesday. You will be reimbursed for any unused time on your current policy. Two things - if you are still financing the car, make sure the new coverage is adequate to satisfy the terms of your car loan. Second, make sure the new policy has about the same coverage as your current policy (a lot of times, you will get quoted a better price, but the coverage will be worse [i.e., a $1,000 deductible instead of $500])

Why not wait one more month and then buy the new insurance? You could cancel the old one now and get a small refund.

The MOST it can cost you to cancel the policy is whatever it costs to pay the premiums for the remainder of the term. It shouldn't cost anything.
