Edinburgh Castle was partially locked down yesterday after activists smashed a glass case containing the Stone of Scone.

Three people were arrested after members of the campaign group This Is Rigged tried to smash through a glass box and seize the stone, which is called the Stone of Destiny in Scotland and played a key role in the King’s Coronation.

The stunt, which happened shortly before 11am on Wednesday, caused the closure of the Scottish landmark’s Crown Room and Royal Apartments.

The activists claimed to have spray-painted the words “Is Treasa Tuath Na Tighearna” – Gaelic for “The People Are Mightier Than A Lord” – on the glass, alongside the logo of This is Rigged.

Police Scotland said two women, aged 20 and 24, and one 20-year-old man, were arrested in connection with the damage caused to the glass pane.
