The Chico State mens basketball team fell to host Stanford 91-81 in the Wildcats exhibition opener Thursday.
Justin Briggs led the Wildcats scoring 14 points in 18 minutes of play against the Pac-12 team.
Corey Silverstrom scored 12 points while Isaiah Ellis and Nate Ambrosini notched 11 points, respectively.
Silverstroms second 3-pointer of the game, with 1 minute, 18 seconds left to play in the half, put the Wildcats up for the first time, 3331. The teams went to the half tied at 35.
Briggs free throw out of the break gave Chico State its last lead of the night, 3635.
The Cardinal hit 17 of 26 second-half shots and used a 132 push to take control of the game. Chico State never got back to within striking distance.
The Wildcats will continue its exhibition schedule taking on University of Arizona at 3 p.m. on Sunday in Tucson.
Sundays game will mark the third straight season Chico State has played at Arizona. The hosts are ranked No. 3 in the nation.
The Wildcats put a bit of a scare into Arizona last season before losing 7870. The Division II Wildcats led the Division I Wildcats by 12 mid-way through the first half, 40-37 at halftime, and it was a one possession game with a minute to play.
Columbia 75, Butte 71 >> The Roadrunners fell in their season opener at the Las Positas tournament despite 22 points from Terry Clarendon.
Darae Elliott had 15 points and eight rebounds and Darrien Manker added 12 points for Butte, which had nine players available due to illness.
The Roadrunners trailed 38-35 at halftime but took a 54-52 lead and led 59-58. They then pulled within 71-69 with 13 seconds left before Columbia denied an inbounds pass.
Butte next plays Simpson Universitys junior varsity at 1 p.m. as the tourney continues.
Paradise Adventist 3, Maxwell 1 >> Sarah Goymer and Quincey Carter each had 18 kills in the Cougars win over Maxwell in the Division VI quarterfinals.
The No. 2 seeded Cougars will face off against No. 3 Portola in the semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home.
Butte View League finals >> Host Orland won the team title with 34 points. Sutter was second with 39 and Gridley third with 94. All three teams qualified for the section finals Nov. 9 at West Valley High.
Orlands Angel Garcia (16 minutes, 44 seconds) and Chris Garcia (17:08) finished second and third, respectively. Gridleys Damian Mendoza took 14th in 19:01.
Butte View League finals >> Host Orland took second with 65 points while Sutter had 15. Diana Enriquez was 11th as the top finisher for Orland.
