Short term health insurance doesn't cover routine stuff, or stuff that already is wrong. And, there are VERY few options in Texas for individual health insurance.

Never heard of short term health insurance. You can't just buy it when you will be needing it. You will have to wait till open enrollment.

No such thing as short term insurance. If you had a qualifying event (lost your job, spouse lost job, etc) within the last 60 days that caused you to lose your coverage, the open enrollment restriction doesn't apply. If you now are trying to get insurance because you're having a procedure on the 10th, good luck with that. If you are unable to obtain insurance, talk to the hospital to see if they have a program to help people without insurance. Many do.

Speak with an agent in your area because it depends on where in TX you live. The agent will know and it doesn't cost anything for you to use an agent.
Right now short term policies can only be effective for 90 days. The current administration has changed that policy and soon the short term policies can be available for up to one year with the option to renew for 2 more years.
Short term policies will not keep you from having to pay the tax penalty for no insurance. They also do not have to accept you if you have health issues. They have other limitations that the agent will be able to explain.

Years ago, my (late) husband and I have short term insurance when I left my FT job, which was before the ACA (Obamacare). Back then since prior to the
ACA, (no) insurance would cover us, since my husband had PD, thus would have the policy for 6 months, then had to renew and I think there was a limit of renewals back then, so had to switch companies so as to have (any) kind of health insurance.
Now with these short term polices does (not) cover pre-existing conditions, but will cover anything that is new. So, if you are having some kind of procedure on the 10th, then buying a short term policy won’t work, nor cover it.
Now (if) you have qualifying event, then have 60 days to find insurance, thus would cover it, since with the ACA, does not exclude pre-existing conditions.
Call and talk to an agent in TX, who can advise you of the options.

You can see a doctor at a county clinic and get a prescription. That will be cheaper than buying health insurance for a short term.
